Almost magic: Theremin Style cirque 1919

Technically, I don't know if this is actually "magic" and the music isn't Pete Yorn but it is really freaking cool! If you're not familiar with the crazy instrument in the video, it's called a "Theremin" and was actually invented way back in the year 1919. Look it up on wikipedia if you want to learn more. Coins, a glass, and Vegas

Well, we made it back from Las Vegas in one piece and fortunately with more money than we expected. Granted we still came back with less than we went with just a little more than I thought we would. Anyways, if you haven't been to Las Vegas, it really is as fun as they say it is. All the naked girls and bright lights aside, let me say, there are some awesome magicians in Vegas. In fact I learned this beautiful piece of magic while we were there. In case you're wondering, that's a US Half Dollar and a Mexican Centavo. The half dollar isn't hard to find but I had to go to a small coin shop at the shops of Planet Hollywood for the Mexican piece. Anyways, crazy... it goes right through the bottom of the glass!

Twisting Cards and Slots

The big day is almost here! Tomorrow morning, despite not having a job, I'm going to Las Vegas with Melissa. That's right and we're staying at the Mirage. We've been planning this for our 1 year anniversary since February so we're pretty excited! I'll be sure to take my camera and hopefully take lots of pictures. Hopefully we'll see some magicians while we're there and I can take some movies of them performing. I'll definitely post them once I get back.

Anyways, to tide you over until my return... enjoy this piece posted above! It's simple, it's classic, it's impossible!

Melting rubberbands REDUX

Well, I wasn't originally going to post this video since I just posted this rubberband effect last week but I did do it a little bit differently and the reaction was, well... priceless. The guy in the video is an old friend of mine... and loves magic. Hope you enjoy!

Have you ever seen a rubberband melt? This clip is from the same party as the quarter clip you saw about a week ago. It's not as long as that clip but at least we slow it down so you can really see the rubberbands melt through each other. Do you believe yet?

Get Bill Gates in here! I've got a magic bullet...

Sorry it's been a while since my last post, unfortunately my internet connection has REALLY been acting up lately and was out almost completely for the last 3 days or so. Anyways, as frustrating as it's been, I'm planning on having some new magic up by tomorrow so keep an eye out for that!

So we went to a party last night and we did a little magic... well that may be an understatement. Let me clarify, we did magic all night long and it's funny how there is the sweet spot for doing magic when you've had a few drinks.

Anyways, we got some great reactions throughout the night and this may have been one of the best! Special thanks to Dan Lesko, Rob Larson, Sarah Streder, and Ashley Seale. Enjoy!

If you like magic and you like movies, you must see...

The Prestige, starring Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, and Michael Caine, is one of those movies that just works. I must admit, it helped remind me of why I love both performing magic and being the spectator for someone else performing magic. I also admit that it reminded me that Scarlett Johansson is my girlfriend, not that I could forget (just kidding Melissa haha!).

It seems that there are generally two camps on this movie though. Since it came out around the same time as The Illusionist, starring Ed Norton, people tend to be bigger fans of one or the other. While I've been a big Ed Norton fan since the days of Fight Club, American History X, and Red Dragon, I have to side with The Prestige when it comes to comparing the two.

Both movies clearly took a different approach to the old world of magic and stage magicians. Without getting too detailed into the cinematography, screen play, and acting chops, the easiest way to explain the differences in these flics is to compare them to another different, yet surprisingly similar genre -- Super Hero movies.

You want to see something really cool? Let me try this out with you... this is like internet blog magic... basically think of the Spiderman movies and the recent Batman Begins (the one with Christian Bale and Michael Caine and Mrs. Cruise NOT the one with Arnold or Jim Carrey or Tommy Lee). If your idea of a good Super Hero movie is Spiderman then you'll probably like The Illusionist more; however, if Batman Begins just really did it for you, you're going to L-O-V-E The Prestige.

You see, The Illusionist is a love story between a guy and a girl but The Prestige, well actually, yeah it's also a love story. It's just that with The Prestige, it's a love story of a guy wanting to be a totally dope-ass magician who's love for the art leads him to do some pretty crazy stuff.

I think the comparison to the Super Hero genre is actually quite fitting since that's really what magicians are -- Super Heroes. Maybe they're not saving the world from from fruity spidey villians dressed up like it's the Fourth of July, but they're actually doing many of the things these imaginary super heroes do. Maybe that's why we're so fascinated by magicians (I include myself in that), they do things that we thought only existed in the fairy tale worlds of Gotham City, Spidey-land, and Krypton.

Anyways, I've somewhat drifted away from my original point. Go see The Prestige. You'll probably have to watch it twice, but when you watch it the second time, you'll feel like you've just learned your first magic trick and now you're "in on the secret." If you watch it and don't get it, even after a second viewing, then go watch The Illusionist. But while Ed Norton makes that Orange tree grow, just try to keep the image of him putting that kid's mouth on the curb out of sight and out of mind!

Seriously, go rent or buy The Prestige.

Well, it's finally here... my first original video posting. Expect many more similar to this as well as live public performances.

This happens to be one of my favorite pieces of magic as it is a simple and beautiful effect -- no fancy, tricky, sleight of hand... just pure magic. This can be done at any time, any place, with any cards, and any coins.

I wish I was in Hike School, Billy

I fell behind on posts this week, mainly because I haven't had the chance to get out and shoot any videos. I am actually looking for a cameraman/woman right now who can consistently shoot for me. Hopefully, I can get something posted in the next few days.

Well, the last two weeks have been full of magic, mainly because I spent Monday and Tuesday of each of the last two weeks substitute teaching in Rockford, Illinois. Since I'm currently unemployed, I have plenty of time to both practice my craft and perform. While picking up a couple extra bucks in Rockford teaching, I spent much of my classroom time performing for the students and got some GREAT reactions as always. Isn't subbing just glorified baby-sitting anyways?

We should have a video update in the next few days so stay nearby!
